Zinal
Alpine Freedom
Zinal is a village nestled in the peaceful Val d’Anniviers of the Swiss Valais Alps and offers an authentic alpine getaway with stunning views. Zinal is located at the end of a glacial valley and sits at 1,675m altitude. It is cradled by the iconic mountain range known as the Imperial Crown, made up by world renowned peaks like the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Matterhorn and the Dent Blanche. (Zinal History)
Away from the busy ski resort hot spots such as Zermatt, Verbier, Saas Fee and Crans Montana, the village of Zinal has extensive winter sports facilities with 220 km of slopes (Grimentz-Zinal, St-Luc/Chandolin and Vercorin) and endless opportunities for backcountry skiing. Zinal also provides family-friendly activities such as ice skating, sledging, ski lessons (ESSGZT, SkiZenit), indoor swimming and spa (winter Val D’Anniviers). Last but not least Zinal has 19km of cross country skiing which takes place in a beautiful setting next to the river and 1.5km of track is flood lit in the evening.
The Grimentz - Zinal area is famous for its freeride terrain and access to classic ski touring routes within one days reach of mountain huts such as the Tracuit, Arpitettaz, Moiry and Mountet (SAC Route Portal). These offer unique ski mountaineering opportunities in an epic high alpine environment.
During the summer (Kriss Kyle and Camille Rast in Val d'Anniviers/Valais) Zinal hosts a number of renowned mountain races, the Sierre-Zinal race being the pinnacle. This is a challenging 31km mountain trail running event held every August, attracting athletes and enthusiasts from around the world. There is also the more extreme sky running race Trail du Besso in September. For mountain bike enthusiasts the Val D’Anniviers is the finishing stage of the Swiss mountain bike marathon Grand Raid BCVS that starts in Verbier and ends in Grimentz. The more local Enduro mountain bike race Rock the Besso also takes place at the foot of the Imperial Crown of Zinal.
Complimenting the above events Zinal has over 300 km of hiking trails and 150km of marked mountain biking routes, along with accessible glacier excursions (summer Val D’Anniviers). Zinal is also a stopover for The Walkers Haute Route which starts in Chamonix and finishes in Zermatt.
Exploring local culture with traditional events, such as the cows ascent to Rouaz, makes for many a great family outdoor outing. To add Zinal also hosts the annual gathering of the International Yoga Congress in August.
With a variety of activities year-round, Zinal is an alpine sanctuary for adventurers and nature lovers alike.
